Heffingvrij Vermogen
The Dutch tax-free threshold for Box 3 assets — €57,000 per person (€114,000 for tax partners) in 2025.
Heffingvrij vermogen is the tax-free allowance for Box 3 assets in the Netherlands. The first €57,000 of net assets per person (or €114,000 for fiscal partners) is exempt from Box 3 taxation. Only assets above this threshold generate a deemed return subject to the 36% tax rate.
Impact on prediction market traders
If your total savings and investments — including prediction market account balances, crypto wallets, stocks, and bank deposits — are below €57,000 on January 1, you owe zero Box 3 tax regardless of how much profit you made trading during the year.
Example
You have €90,000 in total Box 3 assets on January 1 (including €15,000 in a Polymarket wallet). The taxable base is €90,000 − €57,000 = €33,000. The deemed return on €33,000 is taxed at 36%.
Planning tip
Since Box 3 is measured on January 1 only, some Dutch taxpayers strategically reduce their asset holdings around the reference date. However, the tax authorities have anti-abuse rules for artificial structuring.
How prediction market platform balances are valued
For Box 3 reporting, your prediction market holdings on January 1 include:
- Cash balances: USD deposits on Kalshi, converted to EUR at the ECB reference rate
- Open positions: The market value of unsettled contracts
- Crypto wallets: USDC or other stablecoins held for Polymarket trading, valued at the January 1 exchange rate
These all count toward your total Box 3 assets and are compared against the heffingvrij vermogen threshold.
Frequently asked questions
If my total assets are below €57,000, do I still need to report them?
Yes. You must still complete Box 3 of your tax return even if your assets are below the threshold. The Belastingdienst needs to verify your declaration. You simply won't owe any Box 3 tax.
Does the threshold change each year?
The heffingvrij vermogen amount is adjusted periodically. It was raised from €50,650 to €57,000 in recent years. Check the Belastingdienst website for the current year's threshold.
